The Case for Cohabitation

by Sanggeet Mithra

When the question of marriage comes up, especially to a woman in her mid-20s, it tends to be, “When will you get married?” and never, “Do you want to get married?” This mostly playful, albeit intrusive, chitchat at family reunions and get-togethers reflects how we as a society perceive marriage; for a woman, it is not a matter of choice. Rather, it is a matter of time – another ‘natural’ event in the course of a woman’s life, its absence suggests that something has gone wrong somewhere.

And if ever asked the latter question, heaven forbid a woman declare that marriage is not for her. A life worth living – because what is life worth without a marriage? – and an opportunity to populate the world, wasted. A humble “I don’t know” is insufficient, too.
