MN’s Journal Entries: Unveiling My Truth

MN* had been wearing the hijab since she was 8 years old, as a requirement at the Islamic school she was attending. At the age of 9, she was asked by her mother to cover up her modesty even outside of school. In 2008, she took off the hijab because she had felt it was a symbol of oppression that didn’t gel with her feminist values. The following journal entries are a personal account delving into the initial days of her unveiling, detailing to herself (and now us, the readers) her thoughts and feelings during that time. These journal entries have been edited for clarity.
